ADVANCED SURF COACHING

WELCOME TO THE TOP ISA EUROPEAN AND INDONESIA SURF TRAINING ACADEMY

ADVANCED SURF COACHING POWERED BY RIP CURL

These advanced training programs are intended for the intermediate to advanced surfers who want a hands-on and individual focused approach. It’s all about catching more waves, surfing better in bigger waves, making more speed, and getting a bigger spray. Surfing is a sport where you can reach a performance plateau and get stuck at a level, unable to progress. Certain skills cannot be learned through experience alone. Everyone can benefit from additional surf coaching. Our training weeks are not intense boot camps where you will do exercises all day long. It is a practical and specific training where we try to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses and find a way to improve your strength & turn your weakness’s in to strengths too.

Advanced Surfing Lessons

What to Expect From Advanced Surf Coaching

Refining your surf technique starts with understanding what you’re doing right and where you can improve.

  • You’ll receive individual coaching in a small group environment (3–6 people).
  • We’ll use video analysis to break down your surfing technique, wave selection, positioning, and movement.
  • Your coach will help identify performance plateaus and provide targeted feedback to deliver quick, measurable results.
  • Whether you're refining existing skills or learning new drills, this process will fast-track your progress.

Surfing at an advanced level requires strong ocean awareness and a broader understanding of competitive and lifestyle factors.

You’ll develop:

  • Waterman skills - confidence and control in the ocean environment.
  • Understanding of rip currents and surf-specific weather patterns. Awareness of surfing drills, diet, and mental preparation for performance.
  • Competitive strategies - how to read the lineup, dominate heats, and manage energy.
  • Sponsorship insights - learn how to position yourself and pursue sponsorship opportunities.
  • Trial heats - participate in simulated heats to sharpen your competitive edge.

GOAL SETTING DRILL

Drill: We will first ask you to surf a twenty minute heat and try to achieve the goals decided upon. Your coach with look at the biomechanics of your surfing & set achievable goals for your ability & the conditions on the day.

BOTTOM TURN DRILLS

Drill: We will send you out into the surf for 20 minutes. Ask them to perform the best quality bottom turns they can do on the waves they catch. Score the bottom turns:

3 points for an excellent bottom turn (good lean, hand touching the wave face, flexed body)

2 points for an average bottom turn (good lean, straight body)

1 point or a poor bottom turn (poor lean, straight body)

RE-ENTRY DRILL

Drill: We will send you out into the surf for 20 minutes. Ask them to perform the best quality re-entries they can do on the waves they catch. Score the re-entries:

3 points for an excellent re-entry (surfboard is vertical as it impacts the lip) 2 points for an average re-entry (surfboard has an angle pointing down the line as it impacts the lip)

1 point for a poor re-entry (surfboard doesn’t impact with the lip with little power and verticalness. This type of re-entry is characterised by the surfer getting momentarily “caught” as they come off the top of the wave )

CUTBACK DRILLS

Drill: We will send you out into the surf for 20 minutes. Ask them to perform the best quality cutbacks they can do on the waves they catch. Score the cutbacks:

3 points for an excellent cutback (surfboard rebounds vertically off the foam rebound)

2 points for an average cutback (surfboard impacts with the foam but not with any height)

1 point for a poor cutback (surfboard “taps the foam” or doesn’t impact with the foam at all)

LAYBACK DRILL

Drill: We will send you out into the surf for 20 minutes. Score each wave normally out of 10 points. Award 3 bonus points for every successfully completed “layback” snap. These additional bonus points are to encourage the surfers to attempt the target manoeuvre.

The technique for performing the “layback” snap is” Perform a quality bottom turn Lean backwards before reaching the top of the wave, touch the wave face with the trailing hand, and continue to look down the line. The momentum from the preceding bottom turn will re-centre the surfer over the surfboard

AERIAL DRILL

Drill: We will send you the surfers out into the surf for 20 minutes. Score each wave normally out of 10 points. Award 3 bonus points for every successfully completed aerial. These additional bonus points are to encourage the surfers to attempt the target manoeuvre.

Perform a quality bottom turn off the bottom of the wave

Just before hitting the lip or foam, forcefully lift your arms above your

head to create a “lift” force

When in the air, try to keep your chest close to your knees. Grab the rail if

you find it necessary

Land in a low stance to handle the impact forces on landing
