TENBY LOCATION INFORMATION

SETTLEMENT ORIGINS

Tenby's Norman roots… Founded in 1093, Tenby started its life as a colonial outpost of the Norman dynasty - something that would distinguish Pembrokeshire and its people from much of the rest of the nation for centuries to come. This Norman heritage can still be found in the town's modern day infrastructure, with the stunning walls that make up the perimeter of the town having initially been built by the Norman Earls of Pembrokeshire in 1245, in a bid to defend against opposing Welsh forces.

D-DAY LANDING

TENBY NORTH BEACH HISTORY

Tenby and Saundersfoot Role in the ‘D’ Day landings took place eleven months before, where Tenby and Saundersfoot hosted a ‘top secret’ military exercise called Exercise Jantzen. Operation Janzen took place 11 months before D Day in July 1943.

It was shrouded in secrecy. Only residents were allowed into the area and telephone lines were all bugged. The smaller boats were loaded in Tenby, with larger vessels coming from Swansea and Port Talbot area.

THE PRINCE'S ESCAPE…

TENBY'S UNIQUE ROLE IN THE WAR OF THE ROSES

As with much of Pembrokeshire, Tenby played a key role within the War of the Roses and boasts some fascinating links to the Tudor dynasty. The extent to which the town was once considered to be an important port is exemplified by the development of the "Five Arches" tower, which stands to this day and was built amidst fears of assault from the Spanish Armada.

Perhaps the most interesting fact from this significant part of the town's history is the successful escape of Henry Tudor to Brittany in 1471. Just 14-years-old, the future king was forced to hide in a damp underground chamber (beneath what is now Boots!) as the war raged, before fleeing to the continent.

TENBY QUAY

The remains of the Norman keep on Castle Hill, this that the town gets its original Welsh name, Dinbych y Pysgod, which means ‘little fortress of the fishes’.

In 1566 a ship from Portugal brought the first recorded cargo of oranges in Wales to the harbour while goods such as wool, seaweed, animal hides and fish were exported from here.

TENBY ROYAL VICTORIA PIER 1899

Pier was built 1899 by the Duchess of york , it was demolished between 1946 and 1953, having fallen into disrepair during WW2

RNLI LIFEBOAT STATIONS

The RNLI  built a lifeboat station on the harbour beach in 1862.

In 1905 the RNLI built a new boathouse and slipway, with rollers so that the boat moved easily, on the north side of Castle Hill.

TENBY GEOGRAPHY

Tenby North is nestled in  Carmarthen Bay, protected from the prevailing south westerly swells, apart from big storms.

Due to the shallow nature of the bay, at low tide, the beaches interlink along the coast, making for some beautiful walks but all the bays are individually cut off at high tide.

The Gower and Worms Head is normally visible to the east.
