Sunday Surf Club FAQ
What age group is the Sunday Surf Club for?
Is surfing experience required?
No experience is needed! Our instructors tailor lessons to suit all skill levels, from beginners to advanced.
We run lessons in 6-week blocks from Spring to Autumn, scheduled around the best and safest surf conditions.
Sessions typically run at Freshwater West, but the location may change based on conditions. Other possible locations include Manorbier, Broad Haven North, Newgale, Broad Haven South, and West Angle Bay.
How do we find out where the lessons run from?
We will email you the specific location the day before each session, so check your email on Saturday. If you don’t see an email, please call our office at 01646 680070 for assistance.
What is the cost, and what’s included?
Each 6-week block costs £90, which includes expert instruction, access to equipment, and a supportive community. Certificates are awarded at the end of the 6 weeks.
You can book online via the provided link or contact us to discuss flexible payment plan options.
Are the instructors qualified?
Yes! All our instructors are trained lifeguards, certified ISA surf coaches, and DBS-checked. They have also completed safeguarding training recommended by Pembrokeshire County Council to ensure your child’s safety and well-being.
No, all necessary equipment is provided as part of the program.
Your child will need swimwear, a towel, flip-flops, and a positive attitude! We’ll provide the rest.
Can my child use their own wetsuit?
Yes, your child can use their own wetsuit. If you're unsure whether it's suitable for the time of year, bring it along to the first session, and we'll check it for you. We may recommend using one of ours, as they are always the right thickness for the sea temperature.
Can my child use their own surfboard?
Yes, your child can bring their own surfboard. Show it to the instructors during the first session. Depending on conditions and your child’s experience, we may recommend using one of our boards as well to ensure they get the most out of the session. For example, if the surf is too small for a shortboard, a soft-top may help them catch more waves and have more fun.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety is our top priority. Sessions are planned based on conditions, but if the weather is unsuitable, we’ll reschedule or offer alternative activities like a surf theory session. We’ll contact you via email to provide updates on canceled sessions and rescheduling details.
What happens if my child is sick?
We understand that things happen. If your child is unwell and unable to attend a session, we are happy to offer a "catch-up lesson" voucher, provided we receive prior notice of their absence.
Absolutely! Parents are welcome to watch from the beach and cheer on their young surfers.
Yes, the club is inclusive! We welcome children of all abilities, including those with additional learning needs and physical disabilities. Our goal is to create a supportive and accessible environment for every child to enjoy surfing. If your child requires specific accommodations or support, please reach out to us. We are committed to ensuring a positive and enjoyable experience for all participants.
I want to book my child for the sessions during the summer holidays, but I can't see the dates yet.
We typically advertise and accept bookings for one block of 6 weeks at a time. Once this block is underway, bookings for the next one will open up.
Generally, yes, sessions run every week. However, we may skip some weeks due to local events, such as Iron Man Pembrokeshire or The Long Course Weekend. We will provide prior notice if a session is canceled due to these events.
Can my child switch groups to be with their friend?
Don't worry about which group your child ends up in—our instructors are there to support everyone as they settle into the groove of learning to surf. If your child’s friend is in a different group, let us know! We can try to switch things around if needed, but we usually surf in close proximity to each other on the beach, so they’ll still get to enjoy the experience together.
Can I help my child in the water?
Yes! Parents are welcome to assist their children in the water, especially for younger surfers, such as 6-7-year-olds. We’re happy to provide you with a wetsuit free of charge, so you can join in and support your child during their session.

PEMBROKESHIRE CHILDREN’S SURF CLUB
Kids surf lessons offer so much more than ‘just’ learning a sport. Yes there’s certainly an element of fitness involved (after a few hours in the surf your children will definitely have worked up an appetite!) but surf lessons can also educate them about the power of the ocean, how to respect nature, staying safe in and around the water and how to have confidence using their bodies.
Here at Outer Reef Surf School we teach children of all ages and specialise in taking young children from 7 years old. Teaching your kids to surf gives them a love of the world around them and an understanding of the delicate balance of the earth’s natural rhythm, giving them a love of the ocean which they’ll take with them right through into adulthood.
If you are thinking about teaching your kids to surf and introducing them to the wonderful world of wave riding, here are 5 reasons why we think kids surf lessons are essential and what they can offer…
1) UNDERSTANDING THE OCEAN AND BEACH SAFETY
A huge part of learning to surf involves understanding tides, weather systems and the ocean swells which affect our coastlines. Wave theory is an important part of kids surf lessons here at Pembrokeshire Surf Club and we teach pupils how waves are formed and the different types of waves and winds they will encounter while they are on the beach. When we teach kids to surf we educate them about how to recognise good conditions & what they mean, and how to stay safe when using the beach. Our vision is to create experiences that will enhance kids appreciation, respect & understanding for sustainable living. It’s all about practising safe habits in an untameable ocean.
2) GAINING CONFIDENCE
If children have learned to swim in a warm calm swimming pool, then trying to swim in the chilly sea with waves crashing over them can be a little alarming for them at first, to say the least! Learning to surf can do wonders to establish confidence in the sea which will hold them in good stead for years to come. Kids will learn to negotiate breaking waves and avoid potential dangers such as rip currents, as well as learning to enjoy the ocean and gain confidence with it in a playful way. Once they know how to gain a little control and understand the tides, confidence and an enjoyment and respect of the sea will follow.
3) EXERCISE AND FITNESS
Surfing is tiring and exerts lots of energy! This can be great for a child who has a boundless supply of energy and we find that excitable children often become focused and engaged when learning to surf. It’s a great way to balance energy and give children focus – our students are usually calm and relaxed after spending an hour in the sea. Kids surf lessons build a foundation of fitness, strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination which can easily translate into other disciplines and positively affect life in general.
4) DETERMINATION AND PERSEVERANCE
Learning to surf, especially in Pembrokeshire , takes dedication. It’s not always the warmest activity (!) and surf conditions are sometimes so negligible that you wonder if it’s worth suiting up and leaving your warm car at all. That said, when you do catch that perfect wave or surf a break all on your own with no one for miles around, it’s pure magic. Teaching children that perseverance, dedication and determination payoff is a crucial life lesson and one which will carry them through life positively – a life pursued by passion is a life which can present multiple opportunities and bountiful happiness.
5) SOCIAL SKILLS AND CAMARADERIE
When children regularly attend extra-curricular lessons and join a club like a surf club, they find a camaraderie and can make friends which last for life. Our little kids surf lessons operate on a ratio of 1 instructor to 8 children for children aged 7 years old and 1:8 for children aged 8-14; being part of something and learning a beloved skill alongside one another can fast turn peers into friends, and that goes for the parents too!
