Surf Lessons At Freshwater West, Pembrokeshire
Learn to surf at one of Wales’ most iconic Atlantic beaches with Outer Reef Surf School. Freshwater West offers powerful scenery, consistent swell and a proper Pembrokeshire surf experience.
Because the beach can be exposed and strong rip currents may occur, beginner sessions are planned carefully around tide, wind, swell and group ability.
Freshwater West Is Amazing — But Conditions Matter
Freshwater West is an exposed Atlantic beach, so the best lesson time depends on the tide, wind, swell size and confidence of the group.
Why Freshwater West Is Famous For Surfing
Freshwater West is a broad, south-westerly facing beach backed by dunes and open coastal landscape. Its exposure to Atlantic swell is one of the reasons it has such a strong reputation among surfers in Pembrokeshire.
It can be an incredible place to surf, but it is not a soft, sheltered beginner beach in every set of conditions. Wind, swell size, tide and rip currents all need to be considered.

Surfing at Freshwater West
Freshwater West is our seaside star and a must-visit beach in Pembrokeshire. It’s breathtakingly beautiful, perfect for family adventures and a favourite with water sports enthusiasts.
WALES' SURFING PARADISE
The southwesterly facing beach is popular with surfers and is often regarded as one of Wales’ best surfing spots, with consistent swell and waves. Sandy adventuresIt’s not all about the water sports though, there’s plenty to see and do on the sand. There are buckets (and buckets) of sand to go around, have fun building sandcastles, try kite flying and enjoy this wild stretch of coast. The beach has a wealth of rock pools; mini explorers love delving into these underwater worlds and spotting marine creatures. We often host beach cleans here to keep this special place clean and tidy; grab a litter picker and join us. Freshwater West (also known as Fresh West) is a beach near Castlemartin, Pembrokeshire in West Wales. It lies along the B4319 road and is part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Freshwater West is one of Wales' top surfing locations, and regularly hosts surfing tournaments such as the Welsh National Surfing Championships since 1960’s. Since 1999 we have run a lifesaving service & in 2010 the beach has had RNLI lifeguard service during the busier summer months.
ONE OF WALES' TOP SURFING SPOTS
With consistent swell and strong waves, Freshwater West is regarded as one of Wales’ top surfing spots. It’s no surprise then that the south westerly facing beach is the annual host venue of the Welsh National Surfing Championships. The coast here does have strong rip currents, so is for the more experienced surfer and swimmer. If you do want to learn to surf here then we advise using a local outdoor activity provider with the right equipment and experience to help you enjoy this special place safely and responsibly. Our activity partner, Outer Reef Surf School are based in the main beach car park and at Gupton Farm activity base, have a chat with the team or visit their website for more information on learn to surf sessions at Freshwater West. Please note, lifeguards are on duty here between early June and September only.
