Beginner Surfing Lessons

What to Expect in Your First Surf Lesson

Before hitting the waves, we start with the basics on land. Our beach intro is fun, friendly, and packed with useful tips to help you feel confident and prepared.

What we’ll cover:

  • Wetsuit Basics: Learn how to put on and take off your wetsuit properly for comfort and flexibility.

  • Board Setup: Understand how to secure your leash around the board.

  • Leash Attachment: Attach your leash to your ankle over the wetsuit, with the cord pointing outward for safety and mobility.

  • Warm-Up Routine: Enjoy a 3–5 minute dynamic stretch to loosen up your body and get surf-ready.

Before we get wet, it’s important you know how to stay safe. We’ll show you the parts of the board, talk through surf zone flags, and teach the hand signals we use in the water.

What we’ll cover:

  • Board Basics: Learn the key parts of your board — bottom, fin, leash, and rails - and why they matter.

  • Why We Use a Leash: Stay safely connected to your board at all times.

  • Beach Flags: Understand lifeguard flags - where it’s safe to surf, swim, or when to stay out altogether.

  • Instructor Signals: Learn the hand signals your instructor uses so you can understand guidance from a distance.

With gear sorted and safety explained, it’s time to step into the waves. You’ll start learning to control your board and ride your first waves in a safe, supported environment.

In the water, we’ll teach you:

  • Head Up, Board Straight: The importance of posture and direction.

  • Turning the Board: How to turn and face the waves when repositioning.

  • Prone Position (Lying Down): Find the correct trim to keep the board balanced and steady.

  • Catching a Wave: Try both the toboggan technique and paddling to get onto a wave.

  • Riding the Wave (Prone): Stay in control as you ride all the way to the beach.

Safety remains a priority in the water. These lessons help you become more independent while keeping yourself and others safe.

What you’ll learn:

  • Responding to Instructor Signals: Recognise and react quickly.

  • Distress Signal: Know what it is, when to use it, and how it helps.

  • How to Fall Safely: Protect your head, face, and ears if you wipe out.

  • Buddy System: Pair up with someone and watch out for each other.

  • Leaving and Re-entering the Water: Always inform your instructor when leaving or coming back.

As you improve, we’ll introduce small techniques and habits that make a big difference. You’ll start reading the waves better and making decisions like a real surfer.

You’ll practice:

  • Choosing the Right Waves: Learn how to spot the best ones for your level.

  • Stopping Safely: Slide back to the tail and sit on the board while holding the rails.

  • Trimming: Use subtle body adjustments to stay balanced and ride longer.

  • Awareness in the Line-up: Always look left and right and stay mindful of other surfers around you.

Now for the big moment - getting to your feet and riding your first wave. Our instructors give you simple, achievable steps and encouragement all the way.

You’ll practice:

  • Press-Up: Build strength with a 3-second lift using your toes and hands.

  • Sitting on the Board: Learn to sit on your board while facing the beach.

  • Airplane Position: Stretch your arms out in the prone position to build balance.

  • Buddy Boarding: Catch a wave alongside a partner - keeping a safe board-length apart.

  • Standing Up and Surfing: Get to your feet and ride your first wave all the way in!

SUP Course

"We had a fantastic morning doing our SUP course. The meeting place at Stackpole Quay was a National Trust estate and easy to find. The boys running it were so lovely and made us feel safe and relaxed. Very organised and easy briefing; before we could say starfish we were out on the open water!"
