Surfing For Everyone

Making The Ocean More Accessible

Surfing should not feel out of reach. With the right equipment, experienced instructors, suitable conditions and thoughtful support, many people can enjoy the feeling of catching waves, floating, paddling and being part of the ocean environment.

Our adapted sessions are designed for people who may need extra help, reassurance, physical assistance, communication support or a slower, more personalised approach. The goal is always the same: a positive, safe and memorable experience by the sea.

Shared Ocean Experiences

Adapted sessions can be especially powerful for families, carers, schools, support groups and community organisations who want a shared coastal experience.

How We Adapt Sessions

Every Participant Is Different

There is no single version of an adapted surf lesson. Before recommending an activity, we want to understand the participant, their needs, their confidence in water, their communication preferences, mobility, sensory considerations, previous experience and any support already in place.

From there, we can advise on the most suitable option, whether that is adapted surfing, paddleboarding, a family session, a group booking or another Outer Reef activity.

Session Support

Extra Help Where It Is Needed

Our team approach means we can plan around participants who need a little or a lot of extra help. Support may include extra time, additional instructor presence, smaller session planning, tandem equipment or more personalised guidance.

  • Individual needs discussed before booking
  • Activity choice based on confidence and ability
  • Equipment selected around the participant
  • Supportive instructors and clear communication
  • Beach and water conditions considered carefully
  • Family, carer or group involvement where helpful
Equipment & Conditions

Using The Right Kit And The Right Day

Adapted surfing depends heavily on suitable conditions. Waves, tide, wind, temperature, beach access and participant confidence all matter.

Outer Reef has access to equipment such as tandem surfboards, helping provide surfing experiences for people who may not be able to surf independently.

Community Access, Surf Therapy And Coastal Confidence

Adapted surfing connects closely with Outer Reef’s wider community work, including The Shoreline Project, which supports coastal education, conservation, inclusive surf therapy and ocean access for families across Pembrokeshire.

If you are interested in community access, supported sessions, surf therapy, school involvement, partnership work or inclusive coastal activity, this is a great place to start.

Season & Planning

Adapted Sessions Run When Conditions Are Suitable

Adapted surfing is best planned carefully. The current page explains that regular adapted surfing operates from April to October, when the weather and waves are often more suitable for building skills.

Because every participant and every sea state is different, we recommend contacting the team before booking so we can guide you towards the best time, location and activity.

Trusted Local Support

Working With Local Partners

Outer Reef’s inclusive approach has involved working alongside organisations such as Pembrokeshire County Council and the National Trust, helping make coastal activity more accessible in Pembrokeshire.

We are based locally, understand the beaches we use and have many years of experience helping different groups enjoy the sea safely.

Other Ways To Experience The Coast With Outer Reef

Adapted surfing is one route into the sea, but it may not be the right fit for everyone. Depending on the participant, the group and the conditions, paddleboarding, family activity days, private family sessions or carefully chosen coastal activities may be more suitable.
